Midnight Oil

The Australian band Midnight Oil made several excellent albums of guitar-fueled alt-rock during its long career, which began in the 1970s and lasted into the 21st century. Despite international hits that included "Beds Are Burning" and "Forgotten Years," the band is perhaps best remembered for its fierce leftist politics. Outspoken front man Peter Garrett vocalized Midnight Oil's concerns on a litany of issues from the environment and nuclear proliferation to corporate greed and Aboriginal reparations. That the band was as politically conscious as it was, yet still able to produce such memorable music, has proved inspiring to many.
