About this Artist

Mad Cobra

Mad Cobra was one of several dancehall artists to rise to prominence when the style came into its own in the late 1980s and early '90s. The Kingston-born performer was instrumental in introducing rough-and-tumble gangsta themes into Jamaican music, moving it further away from the Lovers Rock and roots themes that previously dominated. Mad Cobra also holds the distinction of being one of the first dancehall stars to score a genuine hit in the United States with his Motown-inspired "Flex," which hit number 1 on the Billboard rap charts in 1992. Though he continued to record and perform into the 2000s, and remained a major figure in reggae circles, he never achieved major crossover success again.
